How to Make a Link Clickable on Social Media & Chat Apps

Discord

Discord supports Markdown link syntax: [your text](https://example.com). This renders as clickable custom text inside embeds (bot messages), forum post descriptions, and regular messages if you have Discord Nitro — without Nitro, typing that syntax in a normal channel message shows the literal brackets instead of a rendered link. A plain pasted URL always auto-links for everyone regardless of Nitro status; wrap it in angle brackets, <https://example.com>, to suppress the automatic preview embed.

WhatsApp auto-links any plain URL pasted into a chat — there's no custom-text option inside a message. To create a link that opens a chat with a specific number pre-filled (a "click to chat" link), use the format https://wa.me/<number>, where the number is in full international format with no leading zeros, spaces, dashes, or a + sign — for example https://wa.me/15551234567. Add ?text= followed by a URL-encoded message to pre-fill the first message too.

Instagram

Instagram doesn't render clickable links inside post captions or comments at all — a pasted URL just displays as plain text. The one exception is your bio, which supports up to five external links; only the first is shown directly on your profile, and tapping it opens a small menu listing the rest.

TikTok

Like Instagram, TikTok treats links in captions and comments as plain text. In your bio, TikTok gives you one dedicated website field (plus optional Instagram/YouTube profile links) rather than a free-form list — if you need to share more than one destination, a link-in-bio landing page is the common workaround.

Facebook & YouTube

Facebook auto-links any URL pasted into a post or comment and generates its own preview card — there's no way to customize the visible link text. YouTube behaves the same way in video descriptions and, on most devices, in comments: paste the URL, YouTube renders it as a plain clickable link automatically.

A regular LinkedIn post or comment behaves like Facebook: paste a URL and LinkedIn auto-links the raw address and builds its own preview card underneath — there's no way to relabel the visible text. LinkedIn Articles and Newsletters use a completely different, full rich-text editor with a real Insert Link tool, so custom clickable anchor text works exactly like it would on a blog. The Featured section on a profile lets you pin a link with its own card, but doesn't support custom link text either.

Reddit & X/Twitter

Reddit supports the same Markdown syntax as Discord — [text](url) — in both posts and comments, so you can fully customize the visible link text. X/Twitter, like Facebook and YouTube, only auto-links plain URLs and doesn't support custom link text in a post.
